How can earth tubes help my home?

20 May 2026

A few feet below the surface, the ground holds a remarkably steady temperature all year — cool in summer, and well above freezing in the depth of a New Brunswick winter. Earth tubes (earth-air heat exchangers) use that free, stable reservoir to temper the fresh air your home brings in.

In winter, outdoor air pulled through a buried pipe is pre-warmed by the ground before it reaches your living space, so your heating system does less work. In summer, the same pipe pre-cools it.

Where they fit with a Sophab

Paired with a Solar Passive Habitat, earth tubes complement the arch's solar gains: the Sophab captures the sun's heat during the day, while the tubes quietly temper the air you breathe under a patio built over the runs. Together they smooth out the extremes of our climate — passively.
